Research Assistant Position – Assessing Climate Change Risk in Europe (ACCREU) project

The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), offers a 2-year full-time research assistant position within the Horizon research project ACCREU, Assessing Climate Change Risk in Europe. ACCREU aims to contribute to the just transition towards climate resilience in the EU, its Member States, and regions, by co-creating and co-delivering with a wide array of stakeholders, new knowledge and actionable insights that connect the challenges of adaptation and mitigation with the multiple and new challenges our society is facing.

At the scientific level, it will provide a comprehensive, integrated, co-created, socio-economic evaluation of future climate risk under different adaptation and mitigation scenarios, across European countries, sectors, households, and business types. Specific attention will be paid to non-market impacts on biodiversity, ecosystems, and health. ACCREU will advance models and methods for climate risk assessment and integrated adaptation decision-making. Novel investigations will be developed to assess poverty, equity, financial, and fiscal implications of climate risk and related policies.

The Research Assistant will contribute to Work Package 2 on Climate impacts and WP3 on adaptation and, specifically, to health-related activities.

Key responsibilities:

We are looking for candidates who can support the following activities:

  • Collecting data related to the socio-economic impacts of climate change on human health, including heatwaves effects on mortality and morbidity, impacts of extreme flood events and infectious diseases.
  • Creation of databases and technical analysis of the data collected.
  • Contribute to the development of project deliverables and scientific articles.
  • Contribute to developing materials for communicating the results to the relevant stakeholders.

Main requirements/skills:

  • University Master’s degree in environmental, social sciences (e.g. economics) or related disciplines.
  • Excellent data analysis and quantitative assessment skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal as well as communication skills, both written and oral, in Spanish and English.

Other experience/skills valued:

Previous experience in developing leading indicators, a solid background in econometrics, data management and programming will be highly valued.

Term of contract

The position will be for a period of 2 years starting in September 2023, linked to the task extension, with a 3-month probationary period.


The position will carry a salary range between 20.800€ and 24.960€ gross/year.
