Two part-time Research Assistants NDC ASPECTS Project


The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), offers two part-time research assistants position contract to work on issues related to issues related to international cooperation and governance in the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector. The applicant will work in the context of the NDC ASPECTS project, a European Commission H2020 research project and related activities. NDC ASPECTS aims to provide cutting-edge analysis and robust scientific evidence to upgrade existing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) up to 2030, including international cooperation and international and multilevel governance. In particular, the research in BC3 will aim to systematically identify transformation opportunities and challenges within the AFOLU sector. The research will be conducted at BC3 and in collaboration with other international research institutions.

About the project:

The NDC ASPECTS project will provide inputs to the Global Stocktake under the Paris Agreement (PA) and support the potential revision of existing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of the PA’s parties, as well as development of new NDCs for the post 2030 period. The project will particularly focus on four sectoral systems that are highly relevant in terms of the greenhouse gas emissions they produce yet have thus far made only limited progress in decarbonization. The sectors addressed by the project are transport & mobility (land-based transport and international aviation & shipping), emission intensive industries, buildings, and agriculture, forestry & land-use, including their supply by and interaction with the energy conversion sector. One of the essential topics addressed by the project is policy assessments and international cooperation and multilevel governance.

Job description:

Key responsibilities:

  • Work with the PI and other members of the team in policy and governance assessments.
  • Write technical reports, including deliverables for the European Commission.
  • Contribute to technical documents and peer-reviewed research in international scientific

 

Main requirements/skills:

The applicant should have a Graduate Degree in environmental sciences or similar with at least 300 credits or a University Master or equivalent, a solid background in international climate change initiatives and UNFCCC in some subsectors of the AFOLU sector.

Other relevant skills:

  • Experience on at least five country national policies related to AFOLU and Climate Change.
  • Interest in the agricultural and forestry sector in the context of climate change mitigation and adaptation
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral) in English
  • Flexibility to collaborate in existing research projects
  • Desire to work in a diverse and multi-disciplinary research environment
  • Working writing and speaking English and Spanish skills. French language skills will be considered as additional.

Term of contract

The positions will be part-time employment contract (up to 17.5-hour week work calendar). The envisaged starting date will be according to the availability of the suitable candidate. The duration of the employment contract will be linked to the end of the project (estimated date 30th April, 2024), with a 3-month probationary period.
