BC3, Basque Centre for Climate Change-k, Otsailaren 9an ospatuko den “Ate Irekiak jardunaldian” parte hartzera gonbidatzen zaitu.
BC3 Basque Centre for Climate Change, 2008 urtean Eusko Jaurlaritzak eta Euskal Herriko Unibertsitateak elkarrekin sortutako Basque Excellence Research Centre (BERC)-a da. Uztailak 2016tik aurrera BC3-a Euskal Unibertsitateko Zientzia Parkean dago kokatua.
Jardunaldi honen helburua, BC3-k burutzen duen klima aldaketaren zientzia Euskal Herriko Unibertsitateko kideei aurkeztea da, beti ere bi erakundeen arteko kolaborazioak zeintzu izan daitezken aztertu eta sustatzeko asmoarekin.
“Ate Irekiak jardunaldia” UPV/EHU-ko ikerlari,irakasle, katedradun, doktorego eta master ikasleei zuzendua dago eta topaketa gisa antolatzen dan. Jardunaldian bi sesio izango dira:
- Ahozko aurkezpenak: BC3 senior ikerlariek gaur egun zentruan burutzen ari den ikerketa aurkeztuko dute.
- Adituen arteko topaketak: BC3-ko ikerlariak UPV/EHU-ko ikerlarientzat eskuragarri izango dira, ikerketa taldeetan burututako ikerketa lerroen informazio sakonagoa eskeini ahal izateko. Diziplina-anitzeko klima aldaketaren zientzia honen gaineko ezagutza, praktika eta esperientziak elkar partekatzea ahalbidetzeko eta gauzatu daitezken kolaborazio erak aztertu eta bideratzeko.

“Ecoinformatics group key activities (ARIES team)”

BC3 has a strong focus on methodological innovations in the field of informatics for sustainability. The ARIES (ARtificial Intelligence for Ecosystem Services) project (http://aries.integratedmodelling.org) is a pioneering example of an e-science collaboratory where independent actors can develop and share interoperable data and models. In BC3-led research, this paradigm has focused on the modeling of ecosystem services, providing a view of coupled human-natural systems, combines an innovative simulation platform and a domain-specific programming language to address the task of integrated social ecological systems (science, management and governance).

“The Science-Policy interface. Conservation of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services”

This research group focuses on problem-oriented science to inform some of the most pressing global environmental challenges society faces today, including climate change. The social-ecological and ecosystem services frameworks are used as means to explore human-nature relationships to better inform ecologically sustainable, economically efficient and socially equitable governance systems. Novel conceptual approaches, as well as qualitative and quantitative methods are applied. The research outputs include scientific papers, research projects and policy orientated documents to share information that can facilitate the transition to a sustainable future under climate change.

This research that deals with how ecosystems affected by ancient agricultural or mining uses recover over long periods of time in areas of Spain and the Arctic. This knowledge allows understand their recovery over long periods of time and how it is affected by past climate changes. It can also inform environmental policies and strategies for land conservation and restoration.

“Understanding the interactions amongst components in agriculture for both CC Mitigation & Adaptation”

Integrated Agriculture and Land management for sustainability: Effective land use decisions require consideration of the interplay of social, economic and environmental effects on land, the recovery pathways of agricultural systems, and the socio-ecological tradeoffs between objectives. This group evaluates the optimal land resources allocation for sustainable, efficient and equitable development while promoting integrative, climate-smart agriculture and ecosystem management producing new knowledge that can be readily used by stakeholders.

“Low Carbon group key activities”

The “Low Carbon” (LC) research line deals with the implications of the transition to a low carbon (and sustainable) economy that will allow us to avoid the worst consequences of climate change. We aim to understand how to reduce as soon as possible greenhouse emissions without unduly affecting economic and social wellbeing, especially among most vulnerable people. We contribute to this research line by assessing the co-benefits and negative side effects of different energy transitions and mitigation options, such as those related to air pollution and health, land-use change and ecosystem services or its macroeconomic implications, so that policy makers can take informed decisions
Different tools and methods are used (for example, Integrated Assessment, CGE, Input-Output, Micro-simulation or Real options model), that allow us to assess the direct, indirect effects and trade-offs of many different policy options and in many diferent dimensions (such as efficiency, equity, job creation or health implications).

“Adaptation group key activities”

This presentation will review the work being carried out in the Climate Change Adaptation Research group at BC3, which focuses on three main topics: climate change impacts and risk assessments, adaptation appraisals and uncertainty. The research in this group is carried out from different perspectives and using a wide variety of approaches and methodologies. We also work on a wide variety of sectors and scales (health, water management, coastal areas, urban areas…).

“Water infrastructure planning under deep uncertainty”

Planning of water infrastructure is a “wicked” problem, with driving forces and boundary conditions that change at small time scales compared with the life span of the infrastructure itself. Using historical analysis and hindsight assessment, we assess the adaptive capacity and the limits of prediction in these systems. Such analysis can then be used to judge the adequacy of proposed decision, dealing with deep uncertainty.

“Climate and Health group key activities”
Aline Chiabai, Senior Researcher at BC3
This group works on improving the currently scattered array of economic indicators related to health impacts and adaptation, as well as co-benefits of mitigation, at different spatial (local, national, EU, global) and temporal scales. BC3 participatory perspective accounts for socio-demographic, economic and cultural factors besides climate variables, including health inequalities and distributional effects. Links with other sectors and benefits (e.g. food, natural environment, energy, transport) that are also crucial for an integrated approach to health
