Dialogue for exchanging information on the state of the global climate system and developments in systematic observation (FCCC/SBSTA/2019/2 para. 58).

Earth Information Day 2021 will consist of an in-person dialogue session and a virtual poster session and focus on two themes, as guided by submissions, and in consideration of the mandates and the wider context of ongoing work under the UNFCCC.

Curtail deforestation: how to measure progress? REDD+ tools and methodologies

Given zero-emission targets by 2050, forests play an increasingly important role in the mitigation of climate change. The Paris Agreement, in its Article 5, recognizes the integral contribution of forests and encourages Parties to take action to implement and support policy approaches and positive incentives for activities relating to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries, also known as REDD+.

The adoption of Warsaw Framework for REDD+ by the UNFCCC in 2013 provided the complete methodological and financing guidance for REDD+ activities and provides an agreed and robust framework for collaboration between countries under the Paris Agreement. As of today, 54 countries have made 69 REDD+ FREL/FRL submissions and/or technical annexes on REDD+ with their BUR, amounting to over 8,000 Mt CO2eq in verified emission reductions, with much more potential that can be realized.

Recognizing the significant contribution of the forest sector to contribute towards net-zero emission targets requires robust national forest monitoring systems and transparent reporting. During this side event, participants will learn about the tools and methodologies currently being used for national REDD+ reporting. This event aims to help in the continuous improvement of tools and methodologies, while also informing practitioners and REDD+ experts undertaking the technical assessment of FRELs/FRLs.

Regions4 Side Event. The leading role of regions for raising ambitions on adaptation and resilience

Format: in-situ for speakers and streamed online.

Objective: Present the role and experience of regions in raising ambitions for adaptation, as a contribution to the global climate agenda, launch statement of regions for COP26, and Regions4 report for COP26. The event will allow to share lessons learned of more than 12 regions and showcase how networks/initiatives like RegionsAdapt facilitate engagement, cooperation, accelerate implementation and strengthen accountability

Organizers: The event is organised by Regions4 and co-organised by members: the Basque Country, Gossas, Cross River State, CONGOPE Ecuador, São Paulo, Mancomunidad Regional de los Andes, Lombardy, Catalonia, Flanders and Scotland. With the support of partners: Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), ORU-Fogar, UNFCCC Race to Resilience Campaign, European Committee of Regions (CoR), Assembly of European Regions, CDP, Climate-KIC, World Resource Institute (WRI), Local Governments & Municipal Authorities Constituency (LGMA).

Through numerous 2nd NDC experiences, the LGMA Constituency aims to make sure multilevel collaboration becomes the new normal for transformative, holistic and inclusive action in the era of climate emergency.

Speakers: – leaders of cities and regions in the LGMA Constituency committed to ambitious climate action – national governments who have raised their climate ambitions by incorporating local and regional governments in their 2nd NDCs – UN agencies and other partners of local and urban climate action.
