Technical Assistant for iMechPro

The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) opens a competitive call for applications for a Technical Assistant with a glaciological background. The applicant will develop her/his work in the context of the Spanish funded project iMechPro: Ice Microstructure and Mechanics, and their Implications for the Integrity of Climate Proxies in Ice Cores.

The main objective of this project is to study the formation and decay of natural ice masses and their climate proxies by means of automated optical microscopy and microstructural analysis at cold temperatures.

The research activities of the Technical Assistant will be conducted at BC3, in its low-temperature laboratory for ice microscopy, the IzotzaLab.

Specifically, the applicant will:

  • Support the maintenance and operation of the IzotzaLab.
  • Prepare (sawing, microtoming, etc.) ice samples for optical microscopy.
  • Accomplish appropriate data treatment of the experimental results.
  • Collaborate in the production of reports and publications.

 

Obligatory requirements:

  • A degree in Physics, Mechanical Engineering or Geology, with proven expertise in the microstructure of natural ice.
  • The applicant must also substantiate experience in automated microscopy with the Leica DM6M optical microscope and image processing with the software FIJI/ImageJ.
  • Availability and capability (incl. driving license) to accede to the IzotzaLab at any time (24/7), in case of an incident (e.g. system or power failure).
  • Advanced skills in LaTeX, Power-Point and Microsoft Word.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and PAST.
  • Advanced skills in spoken and written English, Spanish, and Basque (minimum certified level for each language: B1).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

 

Term of contract

The duration of the contract will be 12 months. The envisaged starting date should be on the 01 November 2020.

Salary

The gross salary will be defined according to the professional experience of the candidate, starting at 15,000 EUR gross per year.
