BC3 participates in H2020 project to facilitate stakeholder dialogue and integrated assessment modelling with respect to the objectives of the Paris Agreement

The new EU H2020 project Paris Reinforce (Delivering On the Paris Agreement: A Demand-Driven, Integrated Assessment Modelling Approach) has kicked off with its first meeting held in Athens in the beginning of June, 2019. The project has been granted over 6.5 million € funding from the European Commission under the call for supporting the design and assessment of climate policies call of the Horizon 2020 program, with the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) as one of the main partners of this consortium.

Responding to climate change requires transdisciplinary approaches along with effective national, regional and global climate policies that are scientifically robust, technically feasible, financially viable, socially acceptable as well as being coordinated in a cooperative manner.

The H2020 PARIS REINFORCE project aims to underpin climate policymaking with robust scientific processes based on over 13 Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) and energy models and results to enhance the science-policy interface, in light of the Paris Agreement and associated challenges. However, a novelty of the project is that it embraces a dynamic stakeholder dialogue, placing stakeholders at the heart of all scientific processes as a part its co-operative design, actively involving all stakeholders (e.g. energy producers, end users, policy makers, coops, NGOs and citizens) in the design process to help ensure legitimacy of the scientific processes in support of climate policymaking.

Paris Reinforce involves 18 partner organizations within its consortium with the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) coordinating the project. The core team contributing from BC3 is composed of Dr. Mikel Gonzalez-Eguino, the Principal Investigator (PI/BC3 Senior Researcher); Dr. Alevgul H. Sorman (WP 2 leader/Ikerbasque Research Fellow); Dr. Dirk-Jan Van de Ven (Post-doctoral Researcher); Ester Galende (PhD student/Res. Assistant) and Jorge Moreno (PhD student/Res. Assistant).
