Most examples of maladaptation are only detected after the fact when it is too late to prevent them from doing damage. Still we are fascinated by this concept. This talk addresses maladaptation and its various understandings, and discusses why it matters so much.

Its impacts are already visible, and current evidence agrees that these will amplify as warming progresses. The contribution of epidemiologists is crucial – not only to understand the mechanisms and the magnitude and extension of the health impacts but also to furnish policymakers with scientifically grounded evidence on solutions to protect the population.
Urban climate governance: Better planning for successful adaptation

And, while the IPCC AR6 WGII highlights that adaptation has been increasing across all regions since AR5 (very high confidence) (IPCC, AR6, WGII, SPM: 23), it underlines at the same time that there is increasing evidence of maladaptation (high confidence) (IPCC, AR6, WGII, SPM: 30).
