Scientific Project Manager Position for ARIES project


The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) offers a full-time Scientific Project Manager Position on the ARIES project under the planes complementarios de investigación conjunta dedicated to biodiversity.

Within this granting framework resulting from the Next Generation EU initiative, BC3 has received a 1-year funding from the Spanish and Basque Governments to further expand and stabilize the ARIES platform and develop ad-hoc training, while collaborating with other autonomous communities of Spain.

The ARIES platform supports all activities of BC3 Research Line (RL) 5 on Integrated Modelling of Coupled Human-Natural Systems. The RL generates multidisciplinary scientific knowledge from human-nature interdependence to address complex sustainability problems through artificial intelligence (AI). The goal of the RL is to provide environmental data, models and understanding by retrieving, evaluating and integrating the existing information in order to support effective policy-making where nature counts. Besides Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity, the RL also tackles Natural Capital Accounting, Conservation Finance, Food Security, Marine Spatial Planning, and Renewable Energy. All these products are used to inform sustainability decisions in relation to the SDGs. 

Job description:

We are looking for a Scientific Project Manager who can support the coordination and management of the ARIES team work in the framework of the “planes complementarios de investigación conjunta” dedicated to biodiversity . The ARtificial Intelligence for Environment & Sustainability (ARIES) platform (https://aries.integratedmodelling.org/), is a semantic web infrastructure that uses AI to build computational solutions to environmental, policy and sustainability problems.

The position’s duties will include (1) internal coordination of the ARIES team work within BC3 in the development of the ARIES platform and (2) interfacing with external project partners and stakeholders of the Basque and Spanish institutions involved in the management of Planes Complementarios del Plan de Recuperación, Transformación y Resiliencia.

Key responsibilities:

  • Support the Scientific Coordination (F. Villa, S. Balbi and M.J. Sanz) in the Strategic Management of the project.
  • Financial and administrative project management of the ARIES project.
  • Focal contact point between the Scientific Coordination, and ARIES collaborators worldwide.
  • Manage interactions with internal and external specialists on communication, and with the external advisory board.
  • International travelling and participation to ARIES-related meetings when required.
  • Team work organization and supervision in relation to ongoing ARIES research activities.
  • Organization of project meetings, including financial and administrative aspects.
  • New hires processing and management

Main requirements/skills:

  • Masters or PhD degree.
  • Experience in Scientific Project Management.
  • Experience in R&D projects.
  • Previous exposure to Open Source Software related projects.
  • Excellent project management skills related to finance, administration and communication.
  • Ability to coordinate teamwork and interact with a broad range of scientific and policy stakeholders at European, Spanish and Basque levels.
  • Excellent written and oral command of English and Spanish.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Term of contract

Starting on the 1st of September 2024, the contract will be linked to the duration of the project (31st of August 2025, with a possibility of further extension of the project/contract and if evaluation of the tasks conducted under the project is satisfactory) , with a 6 months probation period.
