BC3´s research project “Nurturing a Shift towards Equitable Valuation of Nature in the Anthropocene (EQUIVAL), one of the 5 winner of PEGASuS, Biodiversity & Natural Assets grant programme
The five projects awarded funding in the first round of the Program for Early-stage Grants Advancing Sustainability Science (PEGASuS) focus on questions critical to human wellbeing – from sustainable farming to the loss of mountain biodiversity.
Payments for Environmental Services (PES) constitute an innovative economic intervention to counteract the global loss of biodiversity and ecosystem functions. In theory, some appealing features should enable PES to perform well in achieving conservation and welfare goals. In practice, outcomes depend on the interplay between context, design and implementation. Inspecting a new global dataset, we find that some PES design principles pre-identified in the social-science literature as desirable, such as spatial targeting and payment differentiation, are only partially being applied in practice.
BC3 investigator, Unai Pascual, takes part in the last approved of the IPBES biodiversity report, at a major UN conference for Biodiversity later this year. After almost three years investigating on the current situation of biodiversity in the world, the last IPBES report was approved last week in Medellin, Colombia by the governments of 129 member nations. The study aims to provide a knowledge base for global action on biodiversity, following examples such as that from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, whose knowledge is used by policymakers to set carbon emission targets.
