BC3 researchers propose a new classification of pastoralism in Spain to boost its conservation and sustainability

A recent publication of BC3 in collaboration with experts from the Spanish Platform for Grazing Livestock proposes a classification of pastoral systems in Spain. The study, led by BC3 researcher Rubén Serrano-Zulueta and Pablo Manzano, published in the journal Nomadic Peoples, proposes a classification of the main pastoral systems and communities, with parameters related to management, land and culture. The study, contextualized in a wider effort to map pastoralists worldwide, underscores the urgent need for measures to prevent the collapse of this practice.

Using a participatory approach, researchers combined multiple rounds of feedback between coordinators, a task force, and a monitoring committee to refine the classification of pastoral systems. By integrating both published data and expert knowledge, the study produced a harmonised classification of Spain’s pastoral systems, which was validated through a series of expert reviews.

“Pastoralism has been essential in shaping Spain’s landscapes and biodiversity, but it is now facing a crisis due to socioeconomic and environmental pressures. Our research aims to provide the necessary framework for where we come from and how different are the current contexts of pastoralists. We should consider pastoral communities into rural development and environmental conservation policies,” said Rubén Serrano-Zulueta, BC3 researcher.

The research could help optimise rural management and governance, while  advancing the conservation of traditional landscapes that promote more sustainable food production. By implementing these strategies, the study authors believe pastoralism could play a key role in combating climate change, and enhancing the resilience of rural areas.

“Further studies show how pastoral systems can adapt to emerging environmental challenges, such as climate change or land use changes. Future research will focus on quantifying the contribution to global warming of these pastoral systems” said Rubén Serrano-Zulueta, BC3 researcher.
