The present study collects original monetary estimates for water related ecosystem service benefits on the African continent from 36 valuation studies. A database of 178 monetary estimates is constructed to conduct a meta-analysis that, for the first time, digs into what factors drive water related ecosystem service values in Africa

BC3 Journal Article: Social-ecological outcomes of agricultural intensification

Land-use intensification in agrarian landscapes is seen as a key strategy to simultaneously feed humanity and use ecosystems sustainably, but the conditions that support positive social-ecological outcomes remain poorly documented. We address this knowledge gap by synthesizing research that analyses how agricultural intensification affects both ecosystem services and human well-being in low- and middle-income countries.

BC3 Seminar: Ecosystem Services, Climate Change, and the Environmentalists’ Paradox

The latest IPBES report warns us of ongoing biodiversity collapse. The Ecosystem Services framework suggests that this will seriously affect human well-being. But policy-makers do not seem to respond with any great alacrity to these warnings. Some skeptics even point to rising human well-being as an indication that the claims linking nature and well-being are exaggerated.

Ferdinando Villa co-autor of “Developing Tools for Valuing Natural Capital’s Contribution to Economic Well-Being: OPEN IEEM” blog publication at IDB

New blog post on upcoming collaboration wit the IDB to connect ecosystem services to economic (CGE) models and make underlying data and models FAIR. Under the title "Developing Tools for Valuing Natural Capital’s Contribution to Economic Well-Being: OPEN IEEM" Ferdinando Villa, BC3 Ikerbasque researcher, Onil Banerjee from Natural Resource Economist with the IDB, Kenneth J Bagstad from Research Economist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Denver and Martin Cicowiez from researcher at the Center for Distributive, Labor and Social Studies explains the advancements on linking the IEEM platform with Ecosystem Services Values and to the contribution to economic well-being.
