Revenue Risk of U.S. Tight-Oil Firms

American crude oil prices have dropped significantly of late up to a low of less than $30 a barrel in early 2016. At the same time price volatility has increased and crude in storage has reached record amounts in America. Low oil prices in particular pose quite a challenge for the survival of America’s tight-oil industry.

BC3 Journal Article “Simple or complicated agent-based models? A complicated issue”

Agent-based models (ABMs) are increasingly recognized as valuable tools in modelling human-environmental systems, but challenges and critics remain. One pressing challenge in the era of “Big Data” and given the flexibility of representation afforded by ABMs, is identifying the appropriate level of complicatedness in model structure for representing and investigating complex real-world systems.

BC3 Journal Article “Applicability of economic instruments for protecting ecosystem services from cultural agrarian landscapes in Doñana, SW Spain”

Abandonment and conversion of cultural agrarian landscapes are major drivers behind the loss of ecosystem services in Europe. One incentive for land-use conversion is the higher (private) economic return from industrial mono-functional crops relative to traditional multi-functional ones.

Modeling the effects of urban expansion on natural capital stocks and ecosystem service flows: A case study in the Puget Sound, Washington, USA

This recent BC3 Journal Article authored by Ferdinando Villa examined the effects of two alternative land use-change development scenarios in the Puget Sound region of Washington State on natural capital stocks and ES flows. Land-use change model outputs served as inputs to five ES models developed using the Artificial Intelligence for Ecosystem Services (ARIES) platform.

Biophysical Characterization of Protected Areas Globally through Optimized Image Segmentation and Classification

BC3 just published its new Journal Article co-authored by Javier Martinez-Lopez. Protected areas (PAs) need to be assessed systematically according to biodiversity values and threats in order to support decision-making processes. For this, PAs can be characterized according to their species, ecosystems and threats, but such information is often difficult to access and usually not comparable across regions.

Regional effects of alternative climate change and management scenarios on timber production, economic profitability, and carbon stocks in Norway spruce forests in Finland

In this news Journal Article of BC3 authored by Ane Zubizarreta, we studied regional effects of alternative climate change and management scenarios on timber production, its economic profitability (net present value (NPV), with 2% interest rate), and carbon stocks over a 90 year simulation period in Norway spruce

Contribution of Photodegradation to Litter Decomposition in Semiarid Mediterranean Grasslands Depends on its Interaction with Local Humidity Conditions, Litter Quality and Position

This new BC3 Journal Article look at how UV radiation interacts with prevailing climatic conditions and litter quality to determine leaf litter decompositionas it is fundamental for understanding soil carbon cycling pathways and ecosystem functioning in drylands. We carried out a field manipulative experiment to investigate how litter quality (labile and nitrogen-rich Retama sphaerocarpa vs. recalcitrant and nitrogen-poor Stipa tenacissima), position (on the ground vs. standing) and different UV radiation levels (UV pass vs. UV block) affect litter decomposition rates at two semiarid Mediterranean steppes.

Food fraud and consumers’ choices in the wake of the horsemeat scandal

The purpose of this new BC3 Journal article, authored by Alberto Longo is to investigate consumers’ preferences across Europe for a selected ready meal, ready to heat (RTH) fresh lasagne, to consider whether the effects of potential food frauds on consumers’ choices can be mitigated by introducing enhanced standards of RTH products.
