BC3 Webinar – Heat and health: linking climate science and epidemiology

BC3-Basque Centre for Climate Change Sede Building 1, 1st floor, Scientific Park of the University of the Basque Country, Leioa, Bizkaia, Spain

Climate change is the defining public health challenge of the century. Its impacts are already visible, and current evidence agrees that these will amplify as warming progresses. The contribution of epidemiologists is crucial – not only to understand the mechanisms and the magnitude and extension of the health impacts but also to furnish policymakers with scientifically grounded evidence on solutions to protect the population.

Icy Humanities: A Collaborative Symposium

BC3-Basque Centre for Climate Change Sede Building 1, 1st floor, Scientific Park of the University of the Basque Country, Leioa, Bizkaia, Spain

virtual event of roundtable discussions with Arctic humanists and glaciologists. This event represents a collaboration of Boston University’s Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, the University of Cambridge’s Scott Polar Research Institute, the International Glaciological Society’s Symposium on Ice in a Sustainable Society (ISS), and the University of Bristol’s School of Geographical Sciences.

Manejo sostenible de pastos de montaña (o la vidase una pastora y sus ovejas)

BC3-Basque Centre for Climate Change Sede Building 1, 1st floor, Scientific Park of the University of the Basque Country, Leioa, Bizkaia, Spain

Side event: Land footprint embodied in international trade: a new tool to assess distant drivers of deforestation

According to the State of Agricultural Commodity markets 2020 (FAO, 2021), global trade in agricultural commodities has more than doubled in real value between 1995 and 2018. While this offers opportunities for economic development and progress in food security, increased food production has also induced growing environmental impacts, notably through land use changes.

BC3 Seminar – The Urban Green Divide or Segregating by Greening

BC3-Basque Centre for Climate Change Sede Building 1, 1st floor, Scientific Park of the University of the Basque Country, Leioa, Bizkaia, Spain

In the past two decades, cities in the Global North and South have invested in urban greening projects such as parks, gardens, greenways, or green climate resilient infrastructure to address a variety of environmental, health, economic, and social challenges. Such interventions are often accompanied by large scale real estate projects.

The Hortonmachine – A quick look into the hydro- geomorphologic engine of k.LAB

BC3-Basque Centre for Climate Change Sede Building 1, 1st floor, Scientific Park of the University of the Basque Country, Leioa, Bizkaia, Spain

The workshop will introduce the Hortomachine from a hydro- geomorphologic point of view.
After an overview of the contained tools a quick example of modelling through scripting will be shown.

AdaptaBrasil: Innovative Platform for Monitoring Climate Change

BC3-Basque Centre for Climate Change Sede Building 1, 1st floor, Scientific Park of the University of the Basque Country, Leioa, Bizkaia, Spain

Sustainable development and climate mitigation and adaptation in a country the size of Brazil presents enormous challenges regarding the environmental, social, and productivity sectors. Climate risk is based on the characterization of the social and natural systems linked to vulnerability and exposure to a given hazard.

IGS International Symposium – ICE IN A SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY (ISS)

BC3-Basque Centre for Climate Change Sede Building 1, 1st floor, Scientific Park of the University of the Basque Country, Leioa, Bizkaia, Spain

The International Glaciological Society (IGS) and the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) together with UPV/EHU are glad to announce the International Symposium on ICE IN A SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY (ISS), which will take place in the Basque Country in June 2022.

Decarbonisation for net zero

BC3-Basque Centre for Climate Change Sede Building 1, 1st floor, Scientific Park of the University of the Basque Country, Leioa, Bizkaia, Spain

The world is committed to the temperature target in the Paris Agreement to keep global warming well below 2oC, aiming for 1.5oC. This will require rapid reductions of emissions of GHGs, leading to net-zero emissions by mid-century. The seminar will explore the economics of such a transition to low- or zero-carbon energy sources, in respect of the investments that will be required and the resulting macroeconomic impacts.
