The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) is looking for a motivated forest Postdoctoral researcher to work on the project RESH2O.

Forest expert

A research position in forest management and modelling, including aspects of ecosystem services, forest and their role in mitigation and adaptation to climate change, including ecological, socioeconomic and environmental aspects, using a combination of methodologies. The main objective will be the restoration of ecosystem services and water cycle while addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation in Mediterranean watersheds. The selected candidate will collaborate with the ARIES (ARtificial Intelligence for Ecosystem Services) BC3 community to integrate forest restoration and management models into the semantic web infrastructure that uses artificial intelligence to build computational solutions to environmental, policy and sustainability problems. The ultimate aim will be provide/inform decisions on forest restoration focusing on achieving water and carbon co-benefits, as well as others as deemed appropriated, through a co-production process with the local and regional actors in watersheds.

Key responsibilities:

 Collect all literature relevant to the topic (water, forest, climate feedbacks) and synthetize the knowledge;

  1. Collect and analyze the data related to forest land use dynamics and drivers of change in the Mijares Valley;
  2. Adapt and/or develop forest algorithms and models to be integrated in ARIES, with the aim of integrate them within a holistic, integrated trade-off assessment framework for decision- and policy-making;
  3. Participate as part of the BC3 team in the participatory process/sectorial dialogues in the Mijares Valley, in particular in the aspects related to forest restoration and management.

 Main requirements:

  1. The applicant must have a PhD in forestry, ecology or other relevant fields to forest sciences.
  2. A good background in computational modelling is required, along with programming skills.
  3. The applicant must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Excellent written and oral command of English is required. An ability to work in teams.
  4. Applications including previous experience in the analysis and specific forestry country programs and its relations/linkages with other sectors of the economy will be given priority.

Tenure:

The position will be for a period of 20 months.
