BC3 Seminar: “Climate change in the courts: litigation as a governance mechanism? “

June 5, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

BC3 and UPV/EHU Seminar
“Climate change in the courts: litigation as a governance mechanism?”

Researcher Officer Joana Setzer

British Academy Post-doctoral

I will explore the process through which the courts are being used to address climate adaptation and mitigation. Examples of strategic litigation, public and private, will be presented. I will also consider the complexities of using strategic litigation as an engine of social change beyond the courtroom, and highlight key similarities and differences between the climate litigation movement and other strategic litigation movements. There will also be a discussion on whether strategic climate litigation provides avenues for promoting domestic institutional change and to what an extent it is becoming an integral component of climate change governance.
