Achucarro, BC3, and BCAM successfully celebrate the first edition of the Be Zientzia outreach event in Bilbao

  • 150 students from different educational centres in Bilbao attended the first edition of Be Zientzia, organised by the three BERC centres of Bizkaia.

(Bilbao, 11 October 2024) – On Friday, 11 October, the Ensanche Building in Bilbao hosted the first edition of Be Zientzia, a science outreach fair that brought together more than 150 primary and secondary school students from two schools in the city for a morning full of interactive activities and workshops designed to bring science closer to them in a fun and educational way.

Organised by the BERC centres of Bizkaia – Achucarro, the Basque Centre for Neuroscience; BC3, the Basque Centre for Climate Change; and BCAM, the Basque Centre for Applied Mathematics – this event marked the start of a day full of surprises.

This first edition of Be Zientzia was met with enthusiastic participation from students and teachers, who enjoyed a range of activities including statistics, calculation games, logical origami, the exploration of banana DNA, and calculating its carbon footprint using ping-pong balls.

The students learned about diverse topics such as climate change, the evolution of the brain in different animal species, and mathematics through hands-on workshops led by leading researchers from the three organising centres.

Additionally, throughout the morning, Be Zientzia welcomed Kontxi Claver, Councillor for Economic Development, Commerce, Employment, and Tourism of the Bilbao City Council, and Javier Garcinuño, Director General of Bilbao Ekintza, who had the opportunity to experience the event, further strengthening Bilbao’s commitment to science and innovation.

“We are very grateful for the participation of the schools involved, as well as the entire team of researchers and organisers, whose joint efforts contributed to the success of an initiative that we hope will be repeated very soon,” said representatives from Achucarro, BC3, and BCAM.
