Abstract:
Transformation Laboratories or T-Labs for short are participatory and innovation processes to foster social-ecological changes towards more sustainable pathways. The idea of transformations is a response to incremental adaptation strategies that aim at maintaining business-as-usual. In my presentation I will talk about my experience as part of the T-Lab project in the urban wetland of Xochimilco, in México city. I will briefly explore the nature of problems addressed by T-Labs and emphasise the importance of political agency and imagination as a core aspect of T-Labs.
This is the first activity organised by the Participatory Processes Task Force. We aim to initiate a long-term conversation within BC3 around the importance and challenges of participatory research. After Dr. Siqueiros talk, we will have a conversatorio with attendees around the question: why participation and engagement are important when we seek transformations through our research?
About the Lecturer
Jesús M. Siqueiros is a full-time researcher at the Applied Mathematics and Systems Research Institute at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and a visiting researcher in the Technology and Innovation, Social Simulation Lab at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Ethnology and a PhD in Philosophy of Biology. His research interests include agency and affectivity in human-environment and technological systems and participatory modelling and gamification methods applied to sustainability problems. He is a member of the editorial board of the Sustainability Science Journal.
