The PLANET Food System Explorer – the first open access, detailed mass flow balance model of the global food system: insights and research opportunities

January 13, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

BC3 Seminars

Prof. Peer Ederer

Abstract:

Dr. Ederer will present on the workings of the PLANET Food System Explorer, its mass flow balances, and in particular the analysis work we do to assign the different biomass flows to the various species country by country. He will also present the global grasslands monitor project with Univ of Pretoria that matches Sentinel 2 data with on-the-grounds-measurements, and thus ultimately wants to arrive at a biome-by-biome estimate of both current grasslands production for ruminants, and potential. Finally, he will talk of a project on methane emissions project which is just starting now, with the Tropomi/Sentinel 5 satellite data, ultimately pursuing the hypothesis that biogenic methane is not responsible for any of the accrual of the methane we observe in the atmosphere.
