During 12-14th of February, the GFOI R&D Coordination component, the GOFC-GOLD Land Cover Office, and BC3 Basque Center for Climate Change organized the 3rd Expert workshop on lessons learned from Accuracy Assessments in the context of REDD+: Uncertainties of emission factors and biomass maps in Leioa.
Last 2nd of February, BC3 hosted 15/16 years old 6 students under the framework of Novia Salcedo’s LANALDI program sharing a working day with them. The goal of this program is to assess in an innovative way young students before choosing their high level education program. Novia Salcedo helps them providing online tools to develop professional skills and also giving them the opportunity to share a full working day with an active professional.
UNEP’s Adaptation Gap Report series focuses on Finance, Technology and Knowledge gaps in climate change adaptation. It compliments the Emissions Gap Report series, and explores the implications of failing to close the emissions gap.
The report builds on a 2014 assessment by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which laid out the concept of ‘adaptation gaps’ and outlined three such gaps: technology, finance and knowledge.
Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, in his State of the Union of 13 September 2017, has referred for the second consecutive year to the report “EU Exports to the World: Effects on Employment and Income” authored by BC3 researchers, Dr. Iñaki Arto and Prof. Anil Markandya.
The Scientific Director of BC3, Prof.Maria Jose Sanz and Dr. Agustin del Prado, Senior researcher at BC3, participated in the IPCC "Second Lead Author Meeting for the Elaboration of the 2019 Refinement to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories", that tool place in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe (25 Sep - 28 Sep 2017).
Biosphere stewardship is about humans recognizing that they are part of and indeed dependent on the biosphere to maintain their own well-being. When humans recognize that, they are also responsible for the sustainable use and protection of the living systems we depend on. But what kind of knowledge systems, values, management practices, behaviour and governance arrangements could help foster this biosphere stewardship? Ikerbasque Professor Unai Pascual from the Basque Centre for Climate Change offered his views on the issue. He highlighted the benefits of incorporating relational values in ecosystem assessments.
"Forest mitigation should be measured using a scientifically-objective approach, not allowing countries to hide the impacts of policies that increase net emissions", writes a group of environmental scientists led by Dr Joanna I House.
Dr Joanna I House is a reader in environmental science and policy at the Cabot Institute, University of Bristol, UK. She co-signed this open letter with other environmental scientists listed at the bottom of the article.
Researchers from BC3, McGill University and Wageningen University organize a parallel session in the main reference forum on climate change adaptation at European scale, the "European Climate Change Adaptation Conference 2017" that is to held in Glasgow from the 5th to the 9th of June.
This parallel session will focus on the challenges of measuring the progress on adaptation at multiple levels.
