Innovative modelling approaches for predicting socio-environmental evolution in highly anthropized coastal lagoons (SMARTLAGOON)

Prof. Javier Senent-Aparicio

Associate Professor
Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia (UCAM)

Abstract:

This seminar presents several tasks that are currently being developed within the framework of the H2020 SMARTLAGOON Project. The main aim of this project is the development of a digital twin of the Mar Menor that can adequately represent the natural processes that occur both in the Mar Menor and in its drainage watershed. A major limitation for hydrological modelling is the lack of observed data. To overcome this limitation, we have installed cameras that allow us to estimate streamflows using particle image velocimetry techniques. In addition, this seminar shows a preliminary approach on the value of a hydrological model to reduce the uncertainties regarding the water balance of the lagoon, and the potential for assessing the effectiveness of the different management practices established in the current legislation.

About the Lecturer

Javier Senent Aparicio holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Murcia (2012) and is currently working as an Associate Professor at UCAM. He has developed the whole of his professional and research career in subjects related to hydrology and water resources planning and management. As a postdoctoral researcher, he has obtained highly competitive grants such as the Fulbright scholarship that allowed him to carry out a research stay at Texas A&M University. He has also been awarded a Jiménez de la Espada scholarship funded by the Seneca Foundation for a research stay at the University of Aarhus. Recently, he has carried out a research stay at Kings College London funded by a José Castillejo fellowship. As principal investigator, he has attracted more than 5 million euros of funding in national and international competitive projects. He is currently working as scientific coordinator in the SMARTLAGOON project, funded in an H2020 Research and Innovation action.
