BC3 Seminars
“Leverage Points for the sustainable management of nature’s contributions to people”

Junior Professor Berta Martin-Lopez

Leuphana University Lüneburg

Abstract:

I will introduce the framework of leverage points, i.e. places to intervene in a complex system that bring transformative change, to identify interventions that can promote sustainable management of nature’s contributions to people. I will specifically focus on the so called deep leverage points, which have exceptional potential to yield truly transformative change towards sustainability. Three deep leverage points have been recently identified as essential to pursue sustainability: (1) influence of value systems on human-nature relations, (2) knowledge production and its use in transformational interventions, and (3) re-structuring institutional systems. Based on empirical evidence, I will shed light on how such three leverage points can promote sustainable management of nature’s contributions to people.

About the Lecturer

Berta Martin-Lopez is Junior Professor in Sustainability Science in the Institute of Ethics and Transdisciplinary Sustainability Research (IETSR) at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg. With a PhD in Ecology and Environmental Sciences, and many years of undertaking applied research, Berta focuses her research on understanding the dynamics of social-ecological systems. Her research has been applied at different spatial scales, from local to global, and in different systems (i.e., wetlands, watersheds, agro-ecosystems, forests, semi-arid, and mountain systems) of a wide range of countries (Spain, United Kingdom, France, Colombia, Peru, Guatemala, Argentina, India and South Africa). Based on this background, interdisciplinary sustainability science and place-based social-ecological research are her core research strengths. At the science-policy interface, she is actively engaged in the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). In addition, she is the Co-Chair of the Programme for Ecosystem Change and Society (PECS), a Future Earth project, and Co-Editor in Chief of ‘Ecosystems and People’
