The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), offers a full-time Research Assistant ipc Position within the URBAN KLIMA 2050 LIFE 18 IPCC 0100000 funded by EUROPEAN UNION’S LIFE PROGRAMME for a period of around 24 months. The position will be located at the BC3 research group Health and Climate, within the Adaptation Lab research line

About the project:

LIFE URBAN KLIMA 2050 is a European project that involves the participation of about twenty entities (including BC3) in the Basque Country. The main objective of the project focuses on the implementation of the goals and objectives of the Basque Country’s Climate Change Strategy URBAN KLIMA 2050, through the achievement of a series of actions and pilot projects over the project’s six-year duration. In this regard, BC3, among others, will contribute to the following areas:

  1. Urban climate change policies and health. Coordination (supervisor): Dr. Aline Chiabai
  2. Technical capacity building for public administration in the face of climate change. Coordination (supervisor): Dr. Estíbaliz Sanz
  3. Development of a climate risk governance model adapted to the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country. Coordination (supervisor): Dr. Estíbaliz Sanz

The level of dedication in different activities will vary throughout the contract period depending on the project needs and the established work schedule and will be managed by the internal project coordinator at BC3.

In general, and for each of these activities, the selected person will be responsible for (but not limited to):

  • Supporting the design of processes to improve the technical capacity of the Basque Country’s public administration.
  • Preparing materials and support for the organization of surveys, focus groups and interviews.
  • Supporting the design and implementation of guides and tools developed within the project framework
  • Reviewing and selecting suitable mechanisms for climate risk management and planning in the Basque Country.
  • Preparing materials and supporting the organization of events, workshops, seminars, surveys, and interviews.
  • Assisting in the creation of databases and technical analysis of collected information.
  • Contributing to the development of project deliverable documents.
  • Contributing to communication and coordination with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, under the supervision of activity leaders.
  • Assisting in BC3’s internal coordination, as well as in the preparation of external dissemination materials.

Required Experience/Skills:

  • Experience in the study of sustainability and climate change policies
  • Experience in the analysis of urban policies, and territorial and urban planning instruments.
  • Master’s degree in a field related to the project or experience in applied research or consulting projects
  • Fluency in Spanish, Basque, and English, demonstrable.
  • Demonstrable fluency in database management and the use of spreadsheets and word processors.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, interpersonal and analytical competencies, with a proven ability to work in a multicultural team.

Term of contract

The envisaged starting date is 1st of July, 2023 or according to the availability of the suitable candidate. The position is linked to the duration of the project (estimated end date 31st of December, 2025), with a probation period of 6 months based on the performance of the work.
