The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) in collaboration with PIE-UPV/EHU offers a 4-year PhD research fellowship.
The PhD position is part of the Horizon Europe research project BlueAdapt, on coastal pathogens and climate change.
The project aims to provide an evidence base for innovation and action around coastal pathogens, by bringing together an interdisciplinary team of biologists, climate scientists, economists, epidemiologists and public health experts to investigate and quantify the future health risks associated with selected coastal pathogens, and identify adaptation measures through concrete case studies. BlueAdapt will also provide tools to assess the impacts of policy responses and communicate the results to a wide audience, including both policymakers and the public.
Now more than ever the importance of keeping in mind the human–animal–ecosystem interface when assessing the evolution and emergence of public health threats is clear. BC3 will work towards the development of an “extended One Health” approach, to help wider engagement in the complex nature of the issue, and illustrating in a local case study how this approach can be used to generate action and knowledge co-production.
The successful candidate should hold a Master’s degree in environmental sciences, biology or ecology. Candidates must be able to demonstrate strong quantitative and qualitative skills, as well as excellent communication skills. Fluency in English is required and a working level of Spanish. A strong motivation, interest in environmental issues, interdisciplinary collaboration and ability to work independently is also required.
We are offering an excellent research environment and close cooperation with a dynamic team and a network of international collaborators within BlueAdapt Project. The position is for a period up to four years (October 2022 – September 2026). Salary and working hours are in accordance with the salary scales of the Basque Centre for Climate Change.
The PhD research will be co-directed by BC3 and PiE-UPV/EHU. The successful candidate will be registered as PhD student at the UPV/EHU, under the Program “Marine environment and resources”.
The candidate will be located at the Basque Centre for Climate Change, Leioa, Spain, and would be required to visit regularly the PiE-UPV/EHU to conduct fieldwork in the Bay of Plentzia.
As a HR Excellence awarded institution, BC3 is committed to conciliate research-academic requirements and family duties. BC3 is particularly concerned with creating equality opportunities for all people despite their sex or gender. Women with relevant qualifications are therefore strongly encouraged to apply for the position.
