Postdoctoral Researcher in Snow Accumulation Modelling

The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) opens a competitive call for applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher with a glaciological background. The applicant will develop her/his work in the context of the Spanish funded project iMechPro: Ice Microstructure and Mechanics, and their Implications for the Integrity of Climate Proxies in Ice Cores.

The main objective of this project is to study the formation and decay of natural ice masses and their climate proxies by means of automated optical microscopy and microstructural analysis at cold temperatures.

The research activities of the Postdoctoral Researcher will be conducted at BC3, in its low-temperature laboratory for snow and ice, the IzotzaLab.

Specifically, the applicant will:

  • Support the maintenance and operation of the IzotzaLab.
  • Mentor degree, MSc and PhD students in the IzotzaLab.
  • Help developing the ice and climate modelling unit of the IzotzaLab.
  • Investigate and improve the representation of snow accumulation in regional circulation models in high-mountain environments.
  • Collaborate in the production of reports and publications.

Obligatory requirements:

  • A degree in Physics and a PhD in climate sciences, with proven expertise in the representation of snow in climate models.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Windows and Linux operational systems.
  • Advanced skills in LaTeX and Microsoft Office.
  • Advanced skills in programming languages (Python, R and Bash).
  • Advanced skills in data processing and big data analysis.
  • Advanced skills in spoken and written English and Spanish (minimum CEFR level for each language: B2).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

 

 

Term of contract

 The duration of the contract will be 12 months. The envisaged starting date is as soon as possible and no later than 01 March 2021.

Salary

The position will carry excellent conditions of work. The salary will be in the range at BC3 for a Technical Assistant – Programme officer with a few years of experience after the university degree.
