Research on nature-society interactions if a very broad field involving many specialisms and disciplinary schools. From a values perspective, conflicts occur when values of different groups are traded off: economic development versus indigenous culture, profit farming versus landscape heritage.

Euskampus Workshop: Biodiversity, ecological functioning, resilience and human impact of conventional and emerging contaminants on health under climate change

The bilateral Euskampus program between the University of the Basque Country and the University of Bordeaux will organize on November 19, 2018, in Bilbao, a symposium between these two universities on the following theme: Impact of conventional and emerging contaminants on biodiversity, ecological functioning, resilience and human health under climate change.

BC3 publication: Progress toward Equitably Managed Protected Areas in Aichi Target 11: A Global Survey

The Convention on Biological Diversity Aichi Target 11 requires its 193 signatory parties to incorporate social equity into protected area (PA) management by 2020. However, there is limited evidence of progress toward this commitment. We surveyed PA managers, staff, and community representatives involved in the management of 225 PAs worldwide to gather information against 10 equity criteria, including the distribution of benefits and burdens, recognition of rights, diversity of cultural and knowledge systems, and processes of participation in decision-making.

Article: Combining eight research areas to foster the uptake of ecosystem‐based management in fresh waters

Freshwater ecosystems are under a constant risk of being irreversibly damaged by human pressures that threaten their biodiversity, the sustainability of ecosystem services (ESs), and human well‐being. Despite the implementation of various environmental regulations, the challenges of safeguarding freshwater assets have so far not been tackled successfully.
