BC3 Journal Article “The means determine the end – Pursuing integrated valuation in practice”

In environmental valuation, although it is well recognised that the choice of method heavily affects the outcome, little is known on how existing valuation methods actually elicit the different values. Through the assessment of real-life applications of valuation of nature, this study tracks down the suitability of 21 valuation methods for 11 value types and assesses the methodological requirements for their operationalization.

BC3 Journal Article “Finance, energy and the decoupling: an empirical study”

This paper investigates the empirical and theoretical basis of the decoupling between energy throughput and economic growth, with a critical view of the use of the decoupling concept as a policy priority. We provide an analysis of the historical trends of the metabolic pattern of European economies over a period of 18 years focusing on the changes in energy throughput and financial assets.

Keynote by Prof.Unai Pascual on values and motivations for biosphere stewardship in the “Resilience Frontiers for Global Sustainability Conference”

Biosphere stewardship is about humans recognizing that they are part of and indeed dependent on the biosphere to maintain their own well-being. When humans recognize that, they are also responsible for the sustainable use and protection of the living systems we depend on. But what kind of knowledge systems, values, management practices, behaviour and governance arrangements could help foster this biosphere stewardship? Ikerbasque Professor Unai Pascual from the Basque Centre for Climate Change offered his views on the issue. He highlighted the benefits of incorporating relational values in ecosystem assessments.

“La directora de BC3 asesorará a la ONU sobre calentamiento”, Diario de Noticias

María José Sanz, la directora científica del Centro Vasco de Cambio Climático (BC3), será una de los cinco científicos españoles seleccionados por la ONU para elaborar dos informes especiales sobre los impactos del calentamiento en el suelo y los océanos.El panel intergubernamental de expertos en cambio climático (IPCC, por sus siglas en inglés) de Naciones Unidas, máximo órgano científico en la materia, ha decidido contar con estos cinco científicos, según anunció ayer en su página web.

Launched special issue on human-nature relational values edited by Prof. Unai Pascual in the journal “Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability”

The special issue would be relevant for a wide readership and especially for people engaged in various disciplines such as sustainability science, environmental ethics, environmental psychology, environmental sociology, ecological economics, anthropology, and associated fields. Potential authors are welcome to check two recent publications on this topic where relational values are introduced (Chan et al., 2016) and connected to current science-policy approaches regarding environmental values
