BC3  Seminars
“Bio-economic modelling in European agroforestry systems”

Dr. Silvestre García de Jalón
Post doctoral researcher at BC3

Recent research indicates that agroforestry (the integration of woody vegetation with crops or livestock) is practised on 15.4 million hectares in the European Union, equivalent to about 3.6% of the territorial area. Sustainable agroforestry can support EU policy goals for a greener economy by improving the competitiveness of agriculture and forestry, the quality of the environment, rural life, and climate change resilience. This presentation shows some of the work developed within the EU-funded research project AGFORWARD. The study shows some bio-economic results of some modelled agroforestry systems in Europe. The Yield-SAFE, Farm-SAFE and Forage-SAFE models were used to assess and compare biophysical growth, profitability and some environmental externalities such as carbon emissions and sequestration, soil erosion, and nonpoint-source pollution from fertilisers in arable, forestry and agroforestry systems. The study shows the economic impact of introducing agroforestry practices from a farmer perspective (financial analysis) and from a societal perspective (economic analysis) by measuring in monetary terms the provision of some regulating ecosystem services.

Dr. Silvestre Garcia Jalón
Silvestre García de Jalón holds a PhD in Agricultural and Natural Resources Economics from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) since October 2014, having obtained the UPM Extraordinary Award of Doctoral Thesis. Silvestre acquired a BSc on Forestry Engineering (2008), a BSc on Agricultural Engineering (2011) and a MSc on Agricultural and Natural Resources (2012) in the UPM. His research focuses on modelling the interactions among economic, social and environmental factors in order to assess the impact of policy interventions. His work has been published in international journals such as Regional Environmental Change, Environmental Science & Policy, Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for a Global Change. Silvestre has worked as a Postdoc at Purdue University in the United States and at Cranfield University in the United Kingdom. Silvestre has participated in various research projects such as ANIMALCHANGE (“An Integration of Mitigation and Adaptation Options for Sustainable Livestock Production under Climate Change”) or AGFORWARD (“AGroFORestry that Will Advance Rural Development”) funded by the 7th Framework Program of the European Commission (EC), “Incorporating Social Dimensions into the Modelling of Adoption of Conservation Practices in the Mississippi River Basin” funded by the United States Geological Survey and “Assessment of the Climate Change Vulnerability in Doñana Wetlands” funded by the Fundación Biodiversidad.
