BC3 Seminar: European forest ecosystem dynamics mapped from space

November 19, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

BC3 Seminars
“European forest ecosystem dynamics mapped from space”

Senior Post-doctoral Researcher Cornelius Senf

University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) Vienna

Abstract:

Increasing mortality has been reported for many forests across Europe, but exact rates and trends remain poorly quantified. We tackle this lack of knowledge by using satellite data for quantifying and mapping rates and trends in forest mortality across Europe. We show that Europe’s forests are undergoing unprecedented changes that will have cascading effects on forest regeneration, biodiversity and the carbon cycle, and thus might challenge the future of Europe’s forests.

About the Lecturer

Dr. Cornelius Senf was trained as a classical geographer, but found its home in the field of landscape ecology. During his dissertation work at Berlin’s Humboldt-University he worked on mapping and analyzing spatial pattern of insect disturbances in western Canada, in close collaboration with the Canadian Forest Service. For his post-doc he joined Prof. Seidl’s group at Vienna’s University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, studying disturbances dynamics across Central Europe. After a quick stop at the Institute on Transformations of Human-Environment Systems in Berlin, he joined back Prof. Seidl’s group in Vienna to continue the their work on European forest dynamics.
