Job description: the position (ideally a post-doctoral scientist) will coordinate BC3 contribution to the Horizon Europe Programme (HORIZON-CL6-2021-BIODIV-01-03) project MARBEFES (MARine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning leading to Ecosystem Services) (GA: 101060937) starting on the 1st of September 2022. The overall aim of MARBEFES is to determine the links between biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and the resulting ecosystem services and societal goods and benefits and to achieve ecological and socio-economic valuation through a validated set of innovative tools in a distributed toolbox to enhance policy and governance for the marine environment to secure its benefits for current and future generations.
The scientist will contribute to the ARtificial Intelligence for Environment & Sustainability (ARIES) platform (https://aries.integratedmodelling.org/), a semantic web infrastructure that uses AI to build computational solutions to environmental, policy and sustainability problems. The position’s duties will include (1) coordination on the development of a Marine Spatial Planning ARIES application (aka ARIES for MSP) and (2) interfacing MARBEFES project partners and other stakeholders around the world to apply ARIES for MSP in developing national SEEA accounts.
The position will require international travel on an as-needed basis.
Experience/skills required: We are looking for an individual who can support strategic activities related to integrated data science and collaborative, integrated modelling on the semantic web, with a focus on ecosystem service modelling and Marine Spatial Planning. Desired qualifications include:
- A PhD in Marine Sciences, Economics, Ecology, Geography, Engineering, Hydrology, or other fields relevant to the position.
- Experience with environmental/ecosystem service modelling and Marine Spatial Planning
- Ability to coordinate teamwork and interact with a broad range of scientific and policy stakeholders
- Strong analytical skills and an ability to learn quickly and to think outside the box. Our work is very innovative and you should expect your job to be both as intellectually challenging and as rewarding. A strong motivation and a desire to learn and explore new technologies are a must.
- Familiarity with (minimum) and past experience using (preferred) the SEEA EA.
- Working knowledge of geomatics and, in particular, open source GIS. Knowledge of OGC services, Geotools, Geoserver is considered a plus.
- Excellent written and oral command of English.
- Ability to work independently, with a diverse, multi-location and multi-lingual team.
