PhD student: Co-designing with stakeholders the integrated assessment of the Paris Agreement

The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) opens a competitive call for applications to one PhD contract to develop a doctoral thesis on issues related to energy modelling and climate policy. The applicant will develop their thesis in the context of the PARIS REINFORCE project, a European Commission H2020 research project. PARIS REINFORCE aims to underpin climate policymaking and enhance the science-policy interface, in light of the Paris Agreement and associated challenges. In particular, the project aim is to develop a novel, demand-driven, IAM-oriented assessment framework for effectively supporting the design and assessment of climate policies in the EU as well as in other major emitter countries. For doing so, a co-design of modeling and stakeholder engagement processes will be conducted to facilitate dialogue across scientists and stakeholders to develop an open access, data exchange platform (I2AMPARIS)

The research will be conducted at BC3 but also in collaboration with other international research institutions.

Specifically, the applicant would:

  • Develop a doctoral thesis in parallel to the tasks associated to Paris Reinforce project.
  • Work with other team members on the design of the interfaces and protocols between modelers and policy-makers and between quantitative and qualitative tools.
  • Help to create, design and manage an open access, data exchange platform of the project (I2AMPARIS) to bridge stakeholder and modelling interfaces
  • Write deliverables for the European Commission.
  • Progressively, publish peer-reviewed research in international scientific journals.

Requirements:

The applicant should have a degree in Environmental/Social Sciences, Economics, Engineering or similar, with a background in quantitative and qualitative methods and with at least 300 credits or a University Master or equivalent. Preferred candidates will have a demonstrated interest in addressing international climate policies and low carbon energy transitions through bridging social science methods with energy/climate modelling tools.

Other relevant skills:

  • Experience on/interest in international climate policies and low carbon energy transitions
  • Interest in mixed methods approaches to collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data for bridging the interface between scientists/modelers and stakeholders/policy-makers.
  • Competence in qualitative research design, stakeholder analysis and case study methods
  • Experience with data collection and triangulation and knowledge about energy/climate modelling tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral) in English
  • Ability to work with a multi-disciplinary team of international researchers
  • Flexibility to travel for project meetings
  • Flexibility to collaborate in other existing research projects at Low Carbon group and BC3.

Term of contract

The position will be for a period of two years with a possibility for extending it for two more years upon a positive assessment of the performance.
