Being able to rely on scientific evidence and tools to manage forecasts is a key factor to improving the status of nature on the planet and to protecting and using ecosystems sustainably, so vital for modern-day and future societies. For a long time, the scientific community has gathered local information on the benefits that nature contributes to population groups and, for the first time, an international group of researchers has created an interactive world map on the benefits of nature worldwide.

Los mejores especialistas internacionales en materia de biodiversidad y ecosistemas se darán cita la semana que viene en Vitoria-Gasteiz para abordar los múltiples valores y beneficios que ofrece la naturaleza, sus ecosistemas y su diversidad biológica. Se trata del panel de expertos de IPBES, la Plataforma Intergubernamental Científico-Normativa sobre Diversidad Biológica y Servicios de los Ecosistemas, un órgano intergubernamental independiente auspiciado por Naciones Unidas. El Departamento de Medio Ambiente, Planificación Territorial y Vivienda del Gobierno Vasco y el Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) han hecho posible traer a la capital alavesa este encuentro, que también cuenta con el apoyo del Ayuntamiento de Vitoria-Gasteiz y de la Diputación Foral de Álava.

One of the greatest social challenges is equity, which, in addition, is one of the basic pillars of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Previous studies have analysed the relations between climate change and biodiversity, showing a positive correlation between both variables.

The prestigious journal Nature Climate Change has just published a report on the role of land use in mitigating climate change and how this should be extensively applied to prevent the increase in global temperature. This study indicates which measures on forests, agriculture and food systems may be critical.
