BC3 – Basque Centre for Climate Change former cientific director Anil Markandya took part this week at the fourteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 14). This conference was scherduled to take place from 2-13 September 2019, at the India Expo Center and Mart in New Delhi, India.Part of the side event “Economics of land degradation: Development Alternatives, WOTR & the ELD Initiative” the Distinguished Ikerbasque Professor Markandya gave a presentation about “Economics of Land Degatation: Insights from an evaluation study in Bundelhand by Development Alternatives Group”.

The latest studies by researchers at the University of Oldenburg (Germany), the Basque Center for Climate Change, and the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change shows that low-income households in Spain can actually benefit from environmental taxes if revenues are redistributed to all taxpayers. Using a computational model to assess the environmental and economic impacts of a green tax reform policy in which revenues are recycled in equal amounts to households in annual lump-sum payments, the researchers found that the policy significantly reduces emissions without imposing economic hardship on any segment of the population.

En edición especial de Egunon Bizkaia de Herri Irratia-Radio Popular de agosto BC3 ha colaborado con Arantza Sinoba en una sección semana donde el cambio climático ha sido el hilo conductor. A lo largo de tres semanas, cada miércoles, entre las 12.30-13.00, investigadores del centro han acompañardo a Sinoba para plasmar las causas y consecuencias de esta crisis climática. ¿Cómo afecta el cambio climático a las ciudades?, ¿Qué estamos haciendo para parar el cambio climático? ¿Qué podemos hacer nosotros como individuos? ¿Cómo afecta a la salud?, ¿Cómo nos está afectando la transición energética?, los investigadores Marta Olazabal, Estibaliz Sanz, Jorge Moreno, Ester Galende e Iñaki Arto han sido los encargados de darles respuestas a estas preguntas.
