PhD student for IAM COMPACT and DIAMOND projects


The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) opens a competitive call for applications to one PhD contract to develop the doctoral thesis in the area of integrated assessment modelling. The applicant will develop the thesis in the context of two European Commission HORIZON research projects (IAM COMPACT and DIAMOND), which aim to contribute to the development and application of integrated assessment models in the context of energy and environmental challenges. In particular, the candidate is expected to develop a deep understanding of an existing model that combinedly analyses economic, energy, land, water, and climate systems. The candidate will learn to use the model, improve some aspects, and develop new capabilities for the analysis of important and timely research questions. The research will be conducted at BC3 but also in collaboration with other international research institutions.

Specifically, the applicant would:

  • Complete a doctoral thesis in parallel to the tasks associated with two different European research projects (IAM COMPACT and DIAMOND).
  • Develop innovative modeling capabilities in the context of the Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM) and the GCAM-Ecosystem suite of tools.
  • Write deliverables for the European Commission.
  • Progressively, publish peer-reviewed research in international scientific journals.

Requirements:

The applicant should have a Master’s degree in Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Computational Sciences or similar, with a solid background in quantitative methods and programming, particularly with the R software environment.

Other relevant skills:

  • Experience/ interest in modelling and environmental or energy-related topics
  • Knowledge on different programming languages: R is required while Git, Python, C++, and JAVA would be highly valuated
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral) in English
  • Flexibility to collaborate in existing research projects.

Term of contract

The position will be for a period of two years with a possibility for extending it for two more years upon a positive assessment of the performance.
