The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) offers a full-time Research Assistant (RA) position for a period of 13 months.
“GHG from extensive livestock systems” is a small project that feeds into the BC3 work currently carried out within the general subject of improving estimations of food-related climate impacts. The main objective of the project relates to the quantification and production of a GHG baseline for livestock pastoral production systems. Some of the main tasks of the expected work will involve (i) gathering existing data on wild herbivory density from various protected areas in Spain that are representative of the country’s most common ecosystems, to estimate the natural carrying capacity of herbivore ecological niches and their corresponding GHG emissions and (ii) establish a general classification of Spanish extensive systems and a broad characterization of their levels of external inputs, through a participative consultation process.
The level of dedication in the different activities will vary throughout the contract period depending on the needs of the project and the established work schedule. This will be managed by the internal project coordinator at BC3.
The selected person will be responsible for (but not limited to):
– Review the state of the art, (including scientific and grey literature), of herbivore density in natural Spanish landscapes, and of existing pastoralist peoples in Spain
– Consult other research groups (notably IREC-CSIC) on wild herbivore densities in various Spanish ecosystems
– Facilitation of participative consultation processes for establishing a characterization of Spanish pastoralist systems.
– Creation of databases and technical analysis of the data collected.
– Contribute to the development of a written report and scientific articles
– Contribute to develop materials for communicating the results to the relevant stakeholders.
The selected person will be physically located in Leioa (Bizkaia) at the UPV-EHU Science Park, at BC3 facilities. The selected person will work under the direct supervision of Dr. Agustin del Prado (project coordinator at BC3) and in close collaboration with Dr. Pablo Manzano and Dr. Guillermo Pardo, according to the needs of the project. The applicant is expected to comply with the standards of conduct and ethics imposed by the host institution (BC3).
Experience / skills required:
- University Master degree in natural sciences or related engineering disciplines
- Knowledge in Spanish ruminant livestock systems, parameter studies and sensitivity analyses, LCA methodology
- Experience in extensive livestock systems characterization
- Fluency in Spanish and English, demonstrable.
- Good oral and written communication skills and interpersonal and analytical skills.
Desirable experience / skills:
- Experience in data collection, data management, data exchange applied to livestock systems
