Forest researcher to work on the project RESH2O

The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) is looking for a motivated forest researcher to work on the project RESH2O
BC3 seeks for a researcher in forest management and modelling, including aspects of ecosystem services, forest and their role in mitigation and adaptation to climate change under RESH20 project. The main objective will be the identification of best choices for restoration of ecosystem services and water cycle while addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation in Mediterranean watersheds, through forest management and forest restoration activities. The selected candidate will collaborate with the ARIES (ARtificial Intelligence for Ecosystem Services) BC3 community to integrate forest restoration and management models into the semantic web infrastructure that uses artificial intelligence to build computational solutions to environmental, policy and sustainability problems. The project RESH2O will be carried out with the support of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, through the Biodiversity Foundation.
Key responsibilities:
Collect all literature relevant to the topic (water, forest, climate feedbacks) and synthetize the knowledge;
- Collect and analyze the data related to forest land use dynamics and drivers of change in the Mijares Valley;
- Adapt and/or develop forest information and tools to be integrated in ARIES, with the aim of integrate them within a holistic, integrated trade-off assessment framework for decision- and policy-making;
- Participate as part of the BC3 team in the participatory process/sectorial dialogues in the Mijares Valley, in particular in the aspects related to forest restoration and management.
Main requirements:
- The applicant must have a degree in forestry (preferable), ecology or other relevant fields to forest sciences.
- Knowledge on remote sensing and geospatial modelling is required.
- The applicant must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Written and oral command of English is required. An ability to work in teams.
Term of contract
The position will be for a period of aprox. 16 months. (Envisaged starting date – 01/03/2021)
