Bosco Lliso won The Prize for Excellent Development Research for his PhD thesis “Social Equity and Payments for Ecosystem Services: From Macro to Micro”

BC3 – Basque Centre for Climate Change postdoctoral researcher Bosco Lliso won the 2nd Prize for Excellent Development Research for his PhD thesis “Social Equity and Payments for Ecosystem Services: From Macro to Micro” by Researcher Group on Development Economics of the German Economy Association and KfW Development Bank. The Research Prize honours academic work combining original research and practical relevance, thus giving fresh impetus for development cooperation

Bosco’s thesis explores the connection between the effectiveness and the equity of environmental programs, finding that the two are inextricably linked. The overarching question that this thesis sheds some light on is whether making environmental policy—specifically “Payments for Ecosystem Services” (PES) programs—more equitable increases the likelihood that they will be successful. The findings of the three empirical chapters suggest that policy-makers would do well to keep equity consideration in mind when designing PES. The first of these chapters is based on the results of a survey of dozens of PES in Latin America. The second and third chapters use a deliberative choice experiments approach to measure participant preferences towards different equity design characteristics of PES in an indigenous community in Colombia, where one of these programs is likely to be implemented in the near future.

The KfW Development Bank supports the German Economic Association’s Research Group on Development Economics in awarding The Young Researcher Award for excellence in policy relevant research on developing countries. The prize is open to all domains of the social sciences relevant to development.
