Technical Assistant for CORaHE project

CLOSED

The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) opens a competitive call for applications for a Research Assistant with an environmental engineering background. The applicant will develop her/his work in the context of the European-funded project CORaHE: Design and Construction of an X-Y-Z-motorized head to perform Deep-UV Raman measurements at microscopic level in cold environments from -30 to -5 °C.

The main objective of this project is to design and build the innovative CORaHE (COld Raman Head) sensor for Deep-UV Raman spectroscopy, to operate under cold environments between ‑30 and ‑5 °C. This portable sensor will perform non-destructive micro-Raman measurements of cold samples, without any limitation in size. The envisioned scientific applications include the characterization of ice-core climate records, snow and permafrost samples, clathrate hydrates, organic trapped chemicals or clays and other hydrated minerals, as well as industrial applications in the fields of low-temperature molecular electronics, frozen food, protection from ice formation or future robotic missions to icy worlds.

The research activities of the Research Assistant will be conducted at BC3 and on the field, as part of the collaboration with the project partners.

Specifically, the applicant will:

  • Support the construction and operation of the CORaHE prototype in the IzotzaLab, the cold laboratory facility at BC3.
  • Collect geological samples of rocks, ice, snow, etc., in multiple sites (often in cold and harsh environments).
  • Prepare the collected samples in the IzotzaLab for optical microscopy and tests with the CORaHE prototype.
  • Accomplish appropriate data treatment of the experimental results.
  • Assess the life cycles of processes and products within the project.
  • Develop communication of results with the project partners.

Requirements:

The applicant should have a degree in Environmental Engineering, with experience in the field of environmental research and life-cycle analysis, as well as a demonstrated interest in the application of new technologies to research in cold environments.

Other relevant skills:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of scientific editing tools (Microsoft Word, LaTeX, BibTeX).
  • Advanced knowledge of statistical tools (Microsoft Excel, SPSS).
  • Availability to conduct field work for sample collection in cold and harsh environments, with flexible schedules.
  • Experience with optical microscopy and image analysis tools (Fiji, ImageJ).
  • Advanced knowledge of life-cycle analysis and its tools (SimaPro).
  • Good skills in spoken and written English, Spanish, and Basque (minimum level required: C1).

Term of contract

The position will be for a period of 6 months.

Salary

The position will carry competitive salary, matching the academic and professional profile of the applicant, and excellent work conditions.

Location

Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), Biscay (Spain).
