BC3 co-chairs a session on Adaptation Tracking at the “3rd European Climate Change Adaptation Conference”, Glasgow 2017

Researchers from BC3, McGill University and Wageningen University organize a parallel session in the main reference forum on climate change adaptation at European scale, the "European Climate Change Adaptation Conference 2017" that is to held in Glasgow from the 5th to the 9th of June. This parallel session will focus on the challenges of measuring the progress on adaptation at multiple levels.

BC3 Journal Article “Delineating boundaries of social-ecological systems for landscape planning: A comprehensive spatial approach”

An increasing number of studies demonstrate the need of applying a social-ecological system approach for landscape planning. However, there is a lack of empirical research that operationalizes the concept of social-ecological system for landscape planning through the characterization of social-ecological interactions. In this study, we develop a methodological framework to delineate the boundaries of social-ecological systems and to characterize their main social-ecological units in a spatially explicit way.

BC3 Press Release (2017-05-04)

"Cities in Southeast Asia, Eastern Africa and on US West Coast need to act on sea-level rise most urgently". [Leioa (Spain), 4th May 2017] For people and insurance companies alike, it is the extreme events – with low probability but highly damaging - that are the most devastating. Storm Desmond, for example, flooded northwestern areas of the UK in 2015, and Hurricane Katrina wreaked catastrophe on New Orleans in 2005. The same is true when it comes to future sea level rise. Now a study assesses coastal flood risk from sea level rise for 120 major coastal cities, and shows which cities are most vulnerable to extreme events.

Seminars

Seminars

The aim of this programme jointly promoted by University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and BC3, is to contribute to climate change knowledge through a series of lecturesled by recognized academicians in the field.

Summer School

Summer School

The objective of the summer school is to offer an updated and recent view of the ongoing
trends in climate change research in an annual basis. The school is designed to approach
the main scientific topics with a multidisciplinary approach, depending on the main trends on climate change issues and allowing for an integrated view and understanding of the problem. As years go by, the school might evolve its different approaches when teaching about climate change

Spring University

Spring University

This training program is an annual 2-week intensive advanced course that enables simple use of complex models through artificial intelligence. The course is meant to build a new generation of scientists and policy analysts, capable of using coupled human-environmental models in research, and policy, to address and solve complex sustainability problems.

Workshops

Workshops

Klimagune

Klimagune

The Klimagune Workshop is a forum for informal discussion on climate change that is open
to all the agents in the Basque Science and Technology Network. The aim of this initiative is to share knowledge, projects and developments in terms of scientific advancements, focusing on the creation of synergies and possible frameworks for cooperation between the various research groups, organisations and institutions that address this matter.

Training Caravan

Training Caravan

The Education Department of the Basque Government and BC3 have gathered to carry
out the Training Caravan initiative, which has as main aim to raise research vocation
among the students of the Basque Country and inform about climate change research.

Through info.bc3research.org blog, you will have access and the opportunity to share in social media, all the BC3 related news and events. This blog will be the platform to disseminate the information about BC3 research (scientific publications with edits of authors, research projects in which BC3 is involved and its impact (activities organized within the scientific research process, the ongoing scientific findings and outputs, “capacity building” activities organized and focused on the decision-making processes (Policy), scientific networks creation and any other science dissemination initiative). Knowledge transfer related news and initiatives will have their own space in this blog , where the activities and events that BC3 organizes to bridge science with policy-making, enterprises and society as a whole will be gathered. Aligned with BC3´s Strategic Goal, promoting the transition towards Trans-disciplinary Science is the final objective. Science with and for society. All the produced news related to the research institution and to Climate Change, organized events by BC3, as well as the activities in which the Knowledge Body of BC3 participate, will be shared in this blog. You have the opportunity to subscribe to our RSS and register to our distribution list.

(Scientific Director of BC3)

Low Carbon

This research line deals with one of the two themes of climate research – mitigation of greenhouse gases (GHGs) that are responsible for climate change. A major source of these gases is the production and consumption of energy and a great deal of effort is being devoted to understanding how to reduce emissions related to energy without hurting the economic and social wellbeing of people now and in the future.

Climate and Natural Environment

Climate change has complex impacts on human well-being. One key pathway is through its effects on natural capital (natural resources and ecosystems). BC3 is concerned with the scientific study of the interplay between climate change and the environment which ultimately affects human well-being. One of our crosscutting research lines is “Climate and the Natural Environment” (CNE). It addresses the interlinkages between climate change, natural capital (natural resources and ecosystems) and the benefits that derive from them in terms of human well-being.

Health and Climate

Climate change poses not only environmental and development issues, but it also represents a big threat to human health, and in the public mind this impact gives rise to the greatest concern. Health assessment in BC3 focuses on these threats, and analyses as well the social, economic and behavioral factors that influence vulnerability of people, communities and social systems. This social dimension is however not fully integrated in the decision policy yet, and BC3 research line on health attempts to contribute in filling this gap.

Climate Policy

The research line “Regional, National and International Climate Policy” focuses on the policy-side of climate research. Sound policy of course is based on the results of work done under the other research lines (energy, natural resources & ecosystem services and health), but also involves some further lines of investigation. This research line therefore will involve drawing out the policy implications of the research undertaken under the other lines as well as undertaking research on issues directly related to the formulation of policy.
