Through info.bc3research.org blog, you will have access and the opportunity to share in social media, all the BC3 related news and events. This blog will be the platform to disseminate the information about BC3 research (scientific publications with edits of authors, research projects in which BC3 is involved and its impact (activities organized within the scientific research process, the ongoing scientific findings and outputs, “capacity building” activities organized and focused on the decision-making processes (Policy), scientific networks creation and any other science dissemination initiative). External Costs of Energy: How Much Is Clean Energy Worth?

BC3 just published a new Journal Article, co-authored by Joseph Spadaro. This article describes the methodology for the analysis of environmental damages and presents key results obtained by the external costs of energy (ExternE) projects of the European Commission as well as analogous work in the U.S. The classical air pollutants (PM, NOx, SO2, and O3) due to the combustion of fossil fuels cause significant damage costs.

The Scientific Director of BC3 Prof. Maria José Sanz has been selected as a member of the Editorial Board (Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry Sector) of the Emission Factor Database (EFDB) for the coming 4 years (2016-2019). In November 2015, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) invited governments and international organizations to nominate experts to serve on the Editorial Board of the EFDB and Prof. Maria José Sanz was selected.

Low Carbon

This research line deals with one of the two themes of climate research – mitigation of greenhouse gases (GHGs) that are responsible for climate change. A major source of these gases is the production and consumption of energy and a great deal of effort is being devoted to understanding how to reduce emissions related to energy without hurting the economic and social wellbeing of people now and in the future.

Climate and Natural Environment

Climate change has complex impacts on human well-being. One key pathway is through its effects on natural capital (natural resources and ecosystems). BC3 is concerned with the scientific study of the interplay between climate change and the environment which ultimately affects human well-being. One of our crosscutting research lines is “Climate and the Natural Environment” (CNE). It addresses the interlinkages between climate change, natural capital (natural resources and ecosystems) and the benefits that derive from them in terms of human well-being.

Health and Climate

Climate change poses not only environmental and development issues, but it also represents a big threat to human health, and in the public mind this impact gives rise to the greatest concern. Health assessment in BC3 focuses on these threats, and analyses as well the social, economic and behavioral factors that influence vulnerability of people, communities and social systems. This social dimension is however not fully integrated in the decision policy yet, and BC3 research line on health attempts to contribute in filling this gap.

Climate Policy

The research line “Regional, National and International Climate Policy” focuses on the policy-side of climate research. Sound policy of course is based on the results of work done under the other research lines (energy, natural resources & ecosystem services and health), but also involves some further lines of investigation. This research line therefore will involve drawing out the policy implications of the research undertaken under the other lines as well as undertaking research on issues directly related to the formulation of policy.
