Tracking water use and carbon uptake in a global change scenario: bridging scales and approaches

Teresa E. Gimeno
UMR ISPA, INRA-Bordeaux (France)

Abstract: The terrestrial biosphere has the ability to partially mitigate climate change as it can counterbalance anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, to a certain extent. However, this ability is in turn constraint by climate change. To predict future biosphere-climatic feedbacks we need a better understanding of the impact of climate change on the key underlying processes regulating the exchange of carbon, water and nutrients in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. In this talk, I will focus on the impacts of rising atmospheric CO2 concentration and increased aridity, due to climate change, on the exchange of water and carbon between the terrestrial vegetation and the soil and the atmosphere. I will give an overview of the results from two manipulative experiments where we assessed the effects of future atmospheric CO2 concentrations and changes in precipitation regimes at the whole ecosystem level. I will also introduce some novel approaches to track these fluxes using atmospheric trace gases and stable isotopes of carbon and water that we implemented applying the latest available spectroscopy techniques.

Lecturer´s CV

My research focuses on the impact of anthropogenic change on terrestrial vegetation functioning. My main background is on plant ecophysiology and I have experience in additional disciplines including: plant-process modelling, spatial statistics, plant-soil interactions and dendroecology. Since December 2014 I am based at INRA-Bordeaux (France) where I am working on a project using trace gases and stable isotopes to measure plant-atmospheric CO2 and water exchange under extreme conditions. Previously, I did a three year post-doc at the Western Sydney University with David Ellsworth. During this stage, I worked in the world’s largest climate-change experiment. Before that, I was in charge of the technical set up and site characterization for a European project assessing the effects of forest tree diversity on ecosystem services, during a postdoctoral stay at the University Rey Juan Carlos (URJC, Spain). I did my PhD at the former Institute of Natural Resources of the Spanish Scientific Council (CSIC), currently integrated within the National Museum of Natural Sciences (MNCN-CSIC) under the supervision of Fernando Valldares and Adrián Escudero. During my PhD, I focused on the combined effects of climate change and changes in land use on native Mediterranean forests. In May 2018, I will join the BC3 as an Ikerbasque research fellow.
