BC3 Side Event at COP21 “Regions and Climate Change: A major challenge for local communities”

Adaptation policies require a high degree of consensus and reconciliation between the different levels of governance that operate in the same region. In the design and implementation of regional strategies of adaptation, in addition to the “vertical” coordination between different levels of territorial government, including the state, regions and other local authorities, it is necessary to deepen the coordination also “horizontal” between different policies (territorial, landscape, environmental, agricultural, civil protection). The event explores how regions are coordinating their actions with showcases from the Mediterranean Climate Area, and a specific focus on the Italian Interregional Coordination Board on Adaptation Strategy, promoted by the Region of Sardinia with the purpose of promoting and monitoring the implementation of regional strategies and plans consistently with the national strategy. The event will bring together representatives from Regional Authorities and climate scientists, proposing successful examples that can be expanded to other regional contexts.
