BC3 researcher Sérgio H. Faria joins the IPCC expert group to prepare the Sixth Evaluation Report


Sérgio H. Faria, Ikerbasque Professor at the Basque Centre for Climate Change, BC3, was selected by the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change, IPCC, to contribute to the Sixth Evaluation Report.

 

The IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report, scheduled for 2022, will serve member countries to assess the progress made on the 2015 Paris Agreements.

The selected group of experts consists of 3 Work Groups, with 721 prestigious researchers from all over the world.  Dr Faria was one of the experts selected from the candidacies presented by the Spanish Government.

The contribution of the Brazilian researcher living in the Basque Country was assigned in IPCC Work Group I, on the Physical Bases of Climate Change. The result of this Work Group will finalise in 2021, and will be added to the Sixth Evaluation Report, which will act as the foundation for debate and decision-making for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Sérgio Henrique Faria has been a part of BC3‘s team since 2011. He is currently leading a research line at the Centre that analyses the Foundation of Climate, which aims to understand past and future climate changes to provide responsible scientific support in drawing up policies, and to conjointly generate scientific knowledge of large scope. This line of research includes two work groups, cryosphere and Climate modelling. Dr Faria is also Presidential Commissioner Professor at the Nagaoka University of Technology (NUT) in Japan, and European coordinator for the programme of excellence Top Global University  for the Japanese Ministry of Education.
